Riposto (Sicilian: Ripostu) is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Catania in Sicily, located about 20 Km of Taormina, 18 Km of Acitrezza, and about 25 km of Catania. The name Riposto derives from commercial Sicilian term U ripostu, that means "wine cellar" because it used to function as a deposit for the huge quantities of wine gathered in the nearby towns of Giarre and Mascali. Riposto is located on the coast from Catania to Messina, and is one of the most historic and picturesque seaside of the Ionian-Etna countries. It is practically joined to the town of Giarre, which also shares the railway station. It has a large, modern marina called "Port of Etna" for his position. |
| A big agricultural center, Riposto boasts a rich production of wine grapes, citrus fruits, and olives. The first suburb belonged to the town of Giarre until 1841, when it became independent thus experiencing a noteworthy financial an urban development. In 1939, the town became dependent once again, subjugated to Giarre's administration, and it was first called "Riposto-Giarre" and in 1942, it was named "Jonia". In 1945, the two towns were administratively divided once again. |

The most outstanding monuments are the classic Chiesa Madre dedicated to S. Pietro, preserving numerous paintings by Giuseppe Zacco (XIX century), Antonio Bonaccorsi (1826-1897) and Matteo Desiderato (XVIII-XIX centuries). In the same church are also visible the only existing French organ in Italy dating back to 1800 and a most beautiful pulpit. Very important is also the Church of the Madonna della Lettera, erected in 1710, beholding a marvelous painting of the Madonna con il Bambino, whose date of creation is uncertain. |
